Meals – 1

In a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, a few Birdies sat casually along the sushi train. They were here to celebrate the arrival of April showers.

This celebration began to take root as a custom in Birdsland over a thousand years ago. It has little to do with the Birdian weather but rather an entertainment brought back by Birdian wanderers. One spring day, a group of Birdian wanderers stumbled upon a private garden where the fragrance of alcohol wafted through the air and faint conversations about poetry and literature could be heard. Intrigued, they sneaked into the garden and saw that at the heart of the gathering sat a group of noble lords alongside a winding stream.

They laid cups full of alcohol on the water and drank the cups that floated down to them. They drank while composing poems and even when they couldn’t write any. At some point, a man who seemed to be the host instructed his servant to bring ink and paper. His eyes looked muzzy. The Birdian wanderers assumed he couldn’t recognise and remember faces properly. So they deceived the servant and replaced the papers with their specially crafted double-layered sheets then gave them to the man.

Unaware, the man began to write, brush dancing as ink met paper. He wrote a prologue for the collection of poems written at the gathering. All guests, including the Birdian wanderers, were amazed and raised a toast to the man and his masterpiece. Soon these men all became intoxicated. The Birdian wanderers then peeled off the two layers of the work. They saved a copy for the men and brought the other one back to Birdsland. This custom of celebration were then introduced to the Birdies and became a popular ceremony in the spring.

Less than a hundred years ago, several Birdian wanderers went on a spring trip and arrived at a riverbank where they wanted to start their April showers celebration. They sat down along the river. One Birdie said in Birdian, ‘Cresting waves of thoughts at the verge of dreamland.’ Another Birdie said in Birdian, ‘For the bloom of absurdity.’ One Birdie said in a language that the readers understand, ‘Someone in the water!’

The Birdies saw a woman walking into the river. They run to the nearest spot to her on the bank, calling out to her, but the woman didn’t respond. She was in her own world. It was still chilly in the spring and she wore a coat with pockets full of stones. The Birdies then recognised the woman. She had recently been seen, completely soaked, walking home from the river. She tripped then vanished into the water, her world disappearing with her.

Today in a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, a few Birdies celebrated the arrival of April showers. In silence, they had meals, talking to the past wishfully.
