Swimming – 1

One Birdie was swimming in a swimming pool. They prefered to swim alone and didn’t like to be overtaken.

They didn’t like splashes from others falling on their skin. They swam forward alone. This was their meditation where they reflected on life, cherished moments and fantasies.

In silence, they pushed the water away gently, breathing, and saw the people who used to be part of their life. Why couldn’t the Birdie stay in these people’s lives anymore? The Birdie thought about them all the time.

Gradually, fatigue, a haphazard army of ants, climbed up their fingers, quivering. The army took over the Birdie’s body, infiltrating their skin and reaching their heart, itching. Why on earth?

Fatigue permeated their mind, dyeing every thought with hesitation – whether to pause or to carry on. The Birdie held onto this moment in their heart. They saw themselves walking down an endless path in a park, with people passing by on a chilly sunny afternoon.

They walked forward and a person from the opposite direction was approaching them. They had always loved them, vaguely. Their face and voice, the Birdie might not be able to recognise …

The Birdie only knew that the person was walking towards the Birdie with sunshine behind them, while the Birdie didn’t feel certain about showing up. The Birdie forgot to blink and their thoughts faded away.

The trembling of their fingers subsided. Water choked them. They clutched the edge of the pool, gasping. Only at that moment they became aware of the warmth of the sun on their back, grounding them in reality.

Dazed, they leaned against the pool’s edge, wondering if they would remember this moment of trance. During moments of trance, nothing occurs except fantasies.

They lay on the pool’s edge, their mind devoid of thoughts. The sky appeared out of focus; eyes appeared avoidant. They turned around, falling into the water and saw lights on the surface.

Bubbles came from their back, covering their vision. They enjoyed the sound of bubbles forming, ascending and dispersing. They resurfaced, their face moistened by water, their expression blurred.

There was no need to choose. They would carry on with their life, loving vaguely and unstably, at least until the next encounter with fatigue awakened their body. They turned around and swam.
